A 339-acre Irvine sprawl with three separate playgrounds, a duck-covered lake, and a flat loop long enough to tire out a toddler and short enough to survive with a stroller.
A park with three playgrounds has one real advantage: nobody has to negotiate. The toddler gets a tot lot sized for toddlers, the six-year-old gets one with actual altitude, and you get to stop refereeing. William R. Mason Regional Park spreads three of them across 339 acres in Irvine, which means there is finally room to breathe.
The centerpiece is a 9-acre lake, added in 1978 during the park's second phase, and it earns its keep. Ducks patrol it. Model sailboats glide across it. Kids will happily stand at the edge narrating the whole scene to you for twenty minutes.

Then there is the loop. Nearly three miles, paved, and almost aggressively flat, which makes it a rare place for a first-time cyclist to build confidence, no hills in the way. Bring the scooter, the training wheels, the double stroller. The path forgives all of it. The practical details. Gates open at 7 a.m. and close at 6 in fall and winter, 9 in spring and summer. Entry is free, but parking runs $3 on weekdays and $5 on weekends, so keep a few singles in the console. Restrooms are on site, the picnic shelters and amphitheater are reservable, and the turf is wide enough for a birthday party that will not bankrupt you. Shade trees exist, but stake out your spot early on a hot afternoon or you will be the family slowly drifting toward the one cool patch like everyone else.
Who is it for? Toddlers through elementary, full stop. There are two sand volleyball courts and a 123-acre wilderness area for the birdwatchers among you, but the real draw is small kids, flat paths, and a lake full of ducks. Come with a picnic, leave with a nap. Verdict: one of the easiest, cheapest good days you can hand a small kid in Irvine.
