The reliable one. A raw bar the length of your arm, a menu that gets reprinted every single day, and a butter cake that quietly ends arguments.
King's Fish House has run the same honest trick since 1997: print a brand-new menu every day based on what actually came in off the boats. It is the flagship of King's Seafood Company, and the Laguna Hills location on Avenida De La Carlota is the big, busy, please-everyone version. Raw bar up front, oysters flown in from both coasts, a sushi program, and a dining room that keeps moving.
A menu reprinted every single day, because the fish decides what is fresh, not the printer.
Get the oysters first, because that is what the raw bar is for. Then the macadamia-nut-crusted halibut, the dish people have been ordering for more than twenty years and flatly refuse to stop. The miso Chilean sea bass is the other regular, and the panko prawns for anyone at the table who is wary of seafood.
Save room, or at least promise yourself you will, for the butter cake: a warm, rich thing you order for the table and then guard with a fork.
This is not a scene, it is a standby. When you need one room that will send grandparents, toddlers, and a suspicious teenager home happy, King's is the answer, and it has been for a quarter of a century.
