A developer wants to replace two parcels near Business Center Drive and Michelson Drive with a pair of multifamily buildings holding 668 apartments, the largest housing proposal now before Irvine's Planning Commission.
It has company. In the same review cycle, KB Home wants to build 108 units off Von Karman Avenue. An affordable-housing project near Red Sage Road would add another 154. A senior-living community would bring 120 independent-living apartments, 60 assisted-living units and 20 memory-care beds. Together the four applications total more than a thousand homes.

They also share an address. Every project sits inside the Irvine Business Complex, the grid of glass towers and parking structures wedged against the 405 and John Wayne Airport. The district was built for people who drive in at nine and leave at five.
Now the city wants them to stay. Each of the projects now before the commission pushes housing deeper into Irvine's job-and-freeway core, turning a daytime workplace into a place people also sleep.
